Ignorance and/or low self-esteem. I think racist people often try to make up for their lack of confidence by bringing others down for something as random as race differences.

Racism is a natural human trait....probably from prehistoric times. It's nothing more than the inborn instinctive "fear of strangers". It's a simple as fear of heights. Instinct causes humans to see the world in terms of "them against us"..and if "they" can be identified VISUALLY, it's simple. Otherwise, we'll settle on a "they" who LOOKS like us, but is "different" in some other way there, the "good guys" and the "bad guys" all look similar)
